CHOICES: A DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

Day one of our lives, we just go with the flow, learning how things function in this new environment that we find ourselves in. At that time, we all know that the baby knows nothing, doesn’t have any consciousness to be able to make any choices, as everything will be driven and decided by the parents or any close elderly person.

Like sand through the hour glass, the days of our lives pass by and we gradually gain consciousness and now can independently make decisions that we feel are the best for us and the future success we hope to achieve. Based on what we learn as we entered mother earth from a plethora of sources, we arrive at a stage were we slowly but surely are left to be independent, being given the freedom to make our own choices.

The tricky and scary part about being independent or free to make our own choices is that, when we make choices on a daily basis, about big or small issues of our lives, we won`t always make the right choices, sometimes the choices we make will have dire consequences which have a tendency of being irreversible. A single bad choice one makes can destroy a lifetime of making the right choices. The choices we make are double edged in that they can make or break your life, one right choice made, has the capacity to uplift your life to greater heights and on the other hand, one bad choice has the power to completely destroy your life in the shortest period of time.

There have been so many examples wherein someone made the choice to post a status, tweet or comment on various social media apps that was offensive or derogatory, which ended up destroying their lives, sometimes they would end up in trouble with the law because of such words. Some people choose to allow anger to control them at a certain moment and it most certainly spells out the end of many bright and flourishing careers.

Many are also susceptible to the persuasion of other people when making a number of choices concerning their lives, such influence is double-edged in that on one hand we might get great advice from the right people and the other side of it we are influenced to make choices that have detrimental effect on our lives and repairing such damage takes a lot time and effort, which in the end might not be of any help depending on the severity of the bad choice we were influenced to decide on.

Now because we are all grown up, mature and conscious of the choices we make, we have an enormous obligation to ensure that over 90% of the choices we make are the right ones and are the best choices for our lives at any given period of time.

Athletes train very hard to be the best in their class, let’s think of soccer players like Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo, they train very hard in order to be the best in the world and it has become a habit to them. From seeing them on TV, it is easily visible that they hate to lose and never want to make that a habit. We should also have the same mentality when it comes to making choices, we should ensure that we make a habit of always applying our mind correctly in making the right choices. We will make mistakes sometimes but there might be another chance to rise back up again in the end and make the choices which will be the best for us with the help of the Holy Spirit.
